TMU Student Union Station Suicide TORONTO, Ontario — Authorities are investigating the death of a Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) student following a tragic incident at Union Station on the morning of January 23, 2026.
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) reported that the normally busy transit hub was temporarily closed at around 8:45 a.m. after emergency crews responded to an “injury on the tracks” on Line 1 (Yonge–University), prompting an immediate suspension of subway service while first responders attended the scene.
Officials confirmed that the individual, later identified by multiple reports as a TMU student, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a subway train. Transit service disruptions extended beyond the subway system, affecting several routes and causing significant delays during the morning commute before full service gradually resumed later in the morning.
Police and transit officials have not publicly released the student’s name or confirmed details about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have also noted that personal information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Union Station, one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs, was closed temporarily as emergency personnel secured the area and collected evidence. Streetcar routes that serve the downtown core were temporarily rerouted or bypassed the station while the investigation was active.
The TTC and Toronto Police Service continue to investigate, and officials have encouraged the public to respect the family’s privacy during a difficult time. Mental health resources and crisis supports have also been highlighted in response to the incident.
— Service on Line 1 Yonge–University resumed later in the morning once the scene was cleared.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses and more information is released by authorities.
